With the start of the 2010 legislative session Connecticut is facing a $515 million budget deficit. Planned Parenthood of Southern New England will be working towards preserving vital funding for health services, including reproductive health services for CT citizens and working to prevent obstacles or legislation that would harm access and delivery to reproductive health care and abortion. Issues we will be advocating for include the following:
- Comprehensive sexuality education with the Healthy Teens CT coalition. Currently our efforts are focused on requiring a health education credit for graduation that includes developmentally appropriate comprehensive sexuality education.
- Paid Sick Days legislation with the Everybody Benefits coalition to ensure paid sick days for CT workers. Women are disproportionately affected by lack of paid sick days because they are most often the primary caregivers to their children and families.
- Advocate for legislation concerning child safe products with the Coalition for a Safe & Healthy CT. As new research continues to emerge we know there is an increasing concern that environmental contaminants may be harming the reproductive health and fertility of women and men.
- Working with the Anti-Discrimination Coalition to advocate for the inclusion of gender identity and expression in the Connecticut non-discrimination laws. We continue to education and advocate for the rights of transgender and gender non-conforming citizens in our state to be free from discrimination
